Crop storage calculator
Enter the crop, the tonnes you want to store and the pile or stack height. The calculator works out the storage volume and the floor area including the share you lose to doors, ducts and access, and suggests store sizes with prices.
Bulk grain pushes hard against the walls. Tent walls are not designed for that: plan concrete push walls or store in bags or big bags.
Planning estimate only, not an engineering calculation. A manufacturer confirms the final design and statics.
Recommended sizes
Indicative estimates for the standard configuration, excluding VAT and installation. Your design can change the price considerably.
Method
Volume = tonnes ÷ bulk density. Floor area = volume ÷ pile height ÷ usable share of the floor (80 %).
| Crop | Bulk density (planning) | Typical pile / stack height |
|---|---|---|
| Potatoes | about 0.67 t/m³ | 3–4 m with ventilation ducts |
| Onions | about 0.6 t/m³ | 2.5–3 m |
| Grain (wheat) | about 0.75 t/m³ | depends on push walls |
| Hazelnuts in shell | about 0.4 t/m³ | sacks or big bags |
| Walnuts in shell | about 0.4 t/m³ | sacks or bins |
Bulk density varies with variety, moisture and cleanliness; use your own figures if you have them.
Important
- Grain in bulk exerts strong pressure on walls. Tent walls are not designed for it: plan concrete push walls or store in bags.
- Potatoes and onions need ventilation and usually insulation; see storing potatoes and onions.
Frequently asked questions
How much space does 1,000 t of potatoes need?
+
With a 3.5 m pile, 0.67 t/m³ and 80 % usable floor: 1,000 ÷ 0.67 ÷ 3.5 ÷ 0.8 ≈ 530 m².
How high can potatoes be piled?
+
Commonly 3–4 m in ventilated bulk stores, depending on the variety, the ventilation system and the store design.
