What matters in a livestock building
- Ventilation first. Animals produce heat, moisture and ammonia. Open side curtains, ridge vents and, for poultry, fans keep the air fresh without draughts at animal height.
- Space per animal. Plan the lying area plus feed alleys and passages. The livestock calculator shows planning figures per species.
- Daylight. A translucent ridge strip brings daylight in and cuts lighting costs.
- Access. Large gable doors let tractors and feed mixers drive through; personnel doors on the sides make daily work easier.
- Winter. Snow load, frost-free water and draught-free lying areas; see winter livestock housing.
Space requirements and welfare rules differ by country and species. Our figures are planning values; check the rules that apply to your farm.
Frequently asked questions
Is a tent barn warm enough in winter?
+
Most cattle and sheep cope well with cold if they are dry and out of the draught. Ventilation matters more than warmth. Young animals and poultry need more: consider insulation and heating for those.
How much space do 100 cattle need?
+
As a planning figure, beef cattle need around 6 m² each including feed alleys, so about 600 m². Dairy cows need more. Use the livestock calculator for your numbers.
