Winter housing for livestock in tent barns

By the tent3d editorial team · Updated 3 October 2026 · 1 min read

Cattle and sheep handle cold well when they are dry and out of the draught. The most common winter problems are not cold but damp air, ammonia and crowding. A tent barn designed around ventilation solves most of them.

Ventilation without draughts

  • Warm, moist air rises and leaves through the ridge; fresh air enters through openings in the upper side walls.
  • Keep the lower wall closed at animal height to avoid draughts on lying animals.
  • Adjustable side curtains let you open more in mild weather and close in storms.

Space and layout

  • Plan enough lying area plus feed alleys; see the livestock calculator.
  • Separate pens for young animals, sick animals and births.
  • A drive-through feed alley saves time every day.

Bedding, water and light

  • Dry bedding is the cheapest insulation for animals.
  • Frost-free drinkers keep animals drinking enough.
  • Daylight through a translucent ridge supports animal health and saves electricity.

Snow and storms

The barn must carry the local snow load; follow the manufacturer's snow-clearing instructions. See wind and snow loads.
